County Tries Again to Revise Prison Development Plan

County officials have begun another round of public meetings seeking the public’s comment on the latest master plan proposal by the Alexander Company to develop the adaptive reuse area comprising the former prison’s reformatory and penitentiary sites just off Silverbrook Road in Lorton. The Alexander Company, a Madison, WI, developer focusing on urban development and historic preservation, was selected by Fairfax County to develop a master plan that would preserve the essential historic core of the adaptive reuse site while minimizing the financial burden on county taxpayers. The plan should also promote uses that are complementary to the surrounding community and provide for flexibility and transparency in the development process.

It had been a wet spring, but on Friday, May 15, no rain was falling. The temperature was 75 at 7 p.m. game time. Humidity hung in the air like a midsummer night. It was perfect for softball, especially for a pitcher trying to keep her arm loose.

Kindergarteners’ Eyes Opened to the World of Art by Dedicated Teacher

The kindergarten students at Greentree Christian Preschool in Crosspointe recently showed their work at a spring art exhibit. Debbie Veale teaches art to two classes. At the beginning of the school year she presented their parents with an outline of what she planned to teach: “Art is a way we express our ideas, thoughts and feelings. My goal for your children is for them to develop a positive ‘I can do’ attitude toward art and self-expression.”
